Interview Like a Pro – Smart Questions to Ask

What questions should I ask when hiring a candidate?

Bonus Round: Creative Questions That Reveal Character

Here are four curveball questions we love to throw in—and what you can learn from each one:

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

This reveals how candidates think and where they see their strengths. Do they lean toward leadership, empathy, solving problems? Their answer often ties back to personality and priorities.

If you could have dinner with three people, who would they be and why?

This one taps into values, interests and inspiration. Whether they pick Elon Musk, Beyoncé or their grandma—it gives insight into who they admire and why.

If you didn’t have to work, what would you do to fill in your days?

Here you’ll learn about their true passions and what motivates them beyond a paycheck. Purpose and curiosity live here.

If you could have your own business, what would it be?

This shows ambition, creativity, and where they feel most energised. It also reveals problem-solving and entrepreneurial thinking—even if they’ve never considered business before.

What does a toxic manager look like to you?

This gives insight into past experiences and the kind of leadership style they thrive under—or run from. It can also flag any sensitivity to feedback or structure.

What is the perfect culture?

This tells you what kind of environment helps them thrive. Whether they value collaboration, flexibility, hustle, or stability—you’ll get a snapshot of whether they’ll click with your current team.

Good interviews uncover how someone thinks—not just what they’ve done.

Here’s your go-to list:

  • Tell us about yourself - the real you - not you as an employee

  • Why did you apply for this role?

  • What do you know about our company?

  • What’s your ideal manager like?

  • What would you do in your first 90 days here?

And don’t forget: “Do you have any questions for us?” Their answer tells you heaps.
