The Real Timeline of a Successful Hire

How long does the hiring process usually take?

Ideally? 2–4 weeks. Realistically? Sometimes longer. And that doesn't include their notice period.

Here’s how it often flows:

  • Week 1: Advertise the role. Get the word out.

  • Weeks 1–4: Screen and interview as resumes come in. Don’t wait—if someone stands out, get them in fast. The best candidates don’t stick around for long.

  • Week 3: Run your second-round interviews and start reference checks. If someone isn’t quite right, you want time to explore your backup options.

  • Weeks 3–4: Make your offer and start prepping onboarding.

Pro tip: Keep the ad live for at least 4 weeks to maximise reach, but don’t hold off interviewing while waiting. If you find a great candidate early, move fast. Still shortlist a couple of backups just in case your first pick pulls out or declines. And always keep your communication clear—no one likes being left hanging.
